Beijing Life - Caves!

Back in early April, Pitzer gave us a 3 day weekend which half of the group utilized to get lost in Inner Mongolia (but they found themselves so it was okay). Actually, they took an overnight train to Batou, arrived in the wasteland at 4am, and then proceeded to wrangle out the next 3 days with lots of staring and minimal Chinese, and flew home on Sunday evening. Not bad, all things considered.

But the rest of us, having no such adventure to divert ourselves with, decided to go see the Silver Fox Caves on the outskirts of Beijing. It turned out to be quite a feat getting there, because it involved taking the 917 bus.

There are three 917s. One goes halfway to the caves, and one goes three-quarters of the way, and one doesn't go anywhere near there at all. We managed to catch the halfway bus and get off at the right stop to switch to the three-quarter bus.

And then we asked every single 917 that came by if it was the right one, and they all said no, and I don't remember exactly what happened but there was indeed a bus, and later a hired car for 15kuai.

We arrived.

The caves had underground rivers! Exciting! You could take boats! You could also pay 20 more kuai to take an EXTRA boat! (I didn't.)
And it was all delightfully, tastefully lit.
(Ha!)

Underground river.

Tasteful lighting.

During the optional 20kuai boatride, they turned off the colored lights, and it suddenly looked sufficiently spooky and delicious.

Waiting for the bus home.

For my "meals" series.

Intrepid explorers!!

We got home at 10:30pm. Lucie and I may have gone out again after. Did we?
